Annual Defender Dinner

Annual Defender DinnerThe annual Defender Dinner occurs each spring. While the Board and staff of FDSDI and ADI organizations take the lead in the planning and execution of the dinner, the following organizations are co-sponsors: Criminal Defense Lawyers Club, Criminal Defense Bar Association, Office of the San Diego County Public Defender, Office of the San Diego County Alternate Public Defender, San Diego County Private Conflicts Counsel, California Appellate Defense Counsel, North County Criminal Defense Bar Association, and Criminal Defense Section of the Foothills Bar Association.

Date: Friday, April 8, 2011

Location : Westin San Diego Hotel, 400 West Broadway, San Diego

Details and RSVP Form

Keynote Speaker: Wilbert Rideau. Mr. Rideau was sentenced to death in 1961 and released in 2005 after a jury in a new trial convicted him of manslaughter, a crime for which he had already served more than the maximum sentence. While in prison, he won many journalism awards and now educates the public about the realities of the justice system and prison through speaking engagements and his recently-published autobiography,

In the Place of Justice: A Story of Punishment and Deliverance .

The unique purpose of the Dinner is to bring together under "one tent" all those who represent the accused. There is no other occasion like it in San Diego County. It brings together the defense bar, staff and guests to celebrate the work of all persons associated with the criminal defense work.

E. STANLEY CONANT AWARD

The E. STANLEY CONANT AWARD for exceptional and unselfish devotion to protecting the rights of the indigent accused, will be presented to:

Robert Boyce

This award is named in honor of Stan Conant, who was the founding Director of the Defenders Program in San Diego. He was widely respected as an advocate and tried many death penalty cases. Under his direction, that office successfully established itself in the community and paved the way for the establishment of the Office of the Public Defender in the mid-1980's. Each year an award is presented in Stan's name to someone who has benefited the San Diego legal community and/or demonstrated exceptional and unselfish devotion to protecting the rights of the indigent accused.

PAUL BELL AWARD

The PAUL BELL AWARD, for excellence in representation of the indigent accused on appeal, will be presented to:

California Innocence Project

The Paul Bell Award is presented in honor of excellence in representation of the indigent accused on appeal. The Award is given annually by the Board of Directors of Appellate Defenders and Federal Defenders in memory of Paul Bell, beloved Assistant Director of Appellate Defenders until his untimely passing in July 1997.

SPECIAL BOARD AWARDS

SPECIAL BOARD AWARDS,
When attorneys distinguish themselves for outstanding service in the legal community, the Board of Directors presents a Special Board Award to honor their achievement. Special awards are not given every year. For example: In 2005, this award was given to the legal defense team of a person who had served 21 years in prison before the team's work lead to his eventual and long-overdue exoneration. Also in 2005, a lifetime achievement award was presented to a retiring attorney for his long career in defense of the accused.
