Shereen Charlick began her legal career as a law clerk for U.S. District Court
Judge William J. Zloch in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in 1989. After completing her
clerkship, she was admitted into the highly selective and competitive,
Department of Justice, Attorney General's Honors Program where she remained
until 1994.
The defense of indigent accused called Shereen into service in 1994 at the
Federal Public Defender's Office in Miami, Florida. While in Florida, Shereen
defended many serious felony cases, including: felon in possession of firearm
cases, drug conspiracies, social security fraud, alien harboring, and armed
robberies. Shereen first joined Federal Defenders of San Diego, Inc. as a
Supervisory Attorney/Trial Team Leader in 1999. She had success as an appellate
advocate as well as a trial attorney. Her victories in the Ninth Circuit
include United States v. Pineda-Torres, 287 F.3d 860 (9th Cir. 2002); United
States v. Pernillo-Fuentes, 252 F.3d 1030 (9th Cir. 2001); United States
v. Velarde-Gomez, 269 F.3d 1023 (9th Cir. 2001) (en banc); and United
States v. Martinez, 232 F.3d 728 (9th Cir. 2000).
In 2004, Shereen returned briefly to the Miami office of the Federal Public
Defender as a Supervisory Assistant Federal Public Defender where she tried
identity theft, voter fraud, immigration and drug cases. However, Federal
Defenders was fortunate enough to lure her back to San Diego in 2005 to assume
the position of Chief Trial Attorney. In her new role, she provides critical
assistance to our Executive Director in all aspects of the operation of Federal
Defenders. Shereen also continues to maintain an active caseload at both the
district court and appellate levels.
